Abstract

Introduction: The proportion of COVID-19 cases in children remains relatively low, representing between 1% and 5% of all cases reported worldwide. Pediatric cases have been observed in our university hospital. The main objective of our study was to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of children who consulted or were hospitalized in our university hospital for Covid19. Material and methods This is a longitudinal descriptive study with analytical aims based on active surveillance of cases notified for Covid19 with monitoring of the cohort of patients hospitalized in our university hospital over a one-year period from 11 March 2020 to 11 March 2021. Data was collected in real time on the given day, using a pre-established data collection form. Data were entered and analysed using Epi info6 and Epidata Analysis software. Results: A total of 9846 patients were notified by the epidemiology and preventive medicine department. The percentage of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in children was 5.3% (349 out of 6582) and 4.3% (146/3393) of all patients hospitalized at our university hospital were children aged between 0 and 16 years. All age groups were affected, but young age was identified as a risk factor for hospitalization (34.2% of hospitalizations involved children under the age of 4). We found that children with diabetes (16.4% vs. 5.2%, p<0.001), hypertensive renal disease (16.4% vs. 5.8%, p<0.001), and cancer (7.5% vs. 0.49%, p<0.001) had a significantly higher risk of intensive care hospitalization. We recorded 11 deaths over one year, giving a case-fatality rate of 3.1%. Conclusion: Covid-19 remains a benign disease with a favourable outcome in the vast majority of children. This study revealed the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Covid-19 in children.
